Alpha Lipoic Acid is a fatty acid with vitamin-like functions of stabilising cell-damaging free radicals, maintaining normal blood sugar levels, and recycling the antioxidant vitamins C and E. It is known as the “universal antioxidant” because it is soluble in both water and fatty environments. ALA is also a coenzyme that aids in proper glucose metabolism to supply energy to the cells.

- Alpha Lipoic Acid supports the body’s natural antioxidant defences against free radicals. It inhibits free radicals from causing damage to important structures of the cells including the cell membranes and the DNA, which largely contributes to the progression of oxidative stress or “rusting” of the cells. Antioxidant protection from Alpha Lipoic Acid is known to help support and promote optimum brain health, cardiovascular functions, and visual acuity throughout the ageing process.
- Although it is an antioxidant on its own, Alpha Lipoic Acid recycles the antioxidant vitamins C, E, and glutathione. This is why, ALA is also being called the antioxidant of antioxidants. Vitamin C is essential for the prevention of scurvy, strengthening the immune system, and skin care. Vitamin E on the other hand protects the skin from damage, supports normal vision, and prevents the formation of clots. Lastly, glutathione as the mother of all antioxidants is very potent and it also contributes to skin health, anti-aging mechanisms, and effective liver detox.
- Alpha Lipoic Acid works as a coenzyme for the metabolism of carbohydrates to adequately supply glucose needed for energy production in the cells. This mechanism helps the body in different ways, such as maintaining blood sugar levels within normal range, preventing fatigue, and reducing the risk for obesity.
- Alpha Lipoic Acid supports healthy ageing. As people grow older, the body produces lesser nutrients including ALA. This leads to oxidation of proteins, which then interferes with the function of the energy producing units in the cells called mitochondria. Studies reveal that ALA supplementation was shown to support mitochondrial functions in cells of older people for improved cell functions.
- Alpha Lipoic Acid can help prevent oxidative stress in the brain, eyes, and cardiovascular system. The brain cells or neurons, blood vessel walls, and macula in the eyes are known to be particularly vulnerable to damage brought by free radicals. By exhibiting potent antioxidant mechanisms and recycling other antioxidants, Alpha Lipoic Acid supports cognitive functions, visual acuity, and can reduce the risks of heart diseases.
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), also known as thioctic acid or lipoic acid is as sulphur-containing fatty acids naturally produced in the body. It performs numerous vitamin-like functions in the body, similar to the ways of the Vitamin B complex vitamins. ALA works as a coenzyme in the metabolism of carbohydrates, the process that converts carbohydrates into glucose, which is then used by the cells’ mitochondria to produce energy. Lipoic Acid is used in the synthesis of the key metabolite acetyl CoA, which is used to convert glucose into energy. Alpha Lipoic Acid is not considered as an essential nutrient since the body produces it, but it’s production begins to decline with age. During these times, the cells of the brain, eyes, and cardiovascular system becomes more prone to oxidative stress. Also, glucose may not be properly converted to energy and may lead to blood sugar elevation and diabetes. Doctor’s Best Alpha Lipoic Acid is a supplemental form of lipoic acid to assist in correcting possible age-related deficiency.
